Olaf Furniss (UK)
Wide Events, Music Tourist
Olaf Furniss is the founder Wide Events, which hosts the award-winning Wide Days convention, the Off The Record youth music industry days and the Born To Be Wide social evenings. In April Wide Days celebrated its 10th anniversary by introducing the Festival Takeover, which saw three summer events invited to guest programme a stage. This initiative will be developed as a new export platform to present talent from outside the UK with acts selected by a festival from their own country. The takeover will also provide an opportunity for the events to promote themselves to the growing music tourism sector.
This is an area in which Furniss has built up a high level of expertise via the Music Tourist consultancy he founded in 2016. It hosted the world’s first music tourism summit and has worked with Arts South Australia, the City of Adelaide, Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, Scottish Enterprise, the Scottish Music Industry Association and the European Composer & Songwriter Alliance. In 2018 Music Tourist collaborated with Newcastle University on a study exploring how to develop closer collaboration between the music and tourism sectors.
Furniss has previously worked as a consultant for industry events including Bylarm, Popkomm and Reeperbahn Festival, as well as writing for fono, Billboard, Music Week and I-Q. Based in Edinburgh, he writes a weekly column focusing on emerging Scottish talent for Scotland on Sunday, and is an occasional contributor to The Guardian, Musik Woche and BBC Radio Scotland.
